Mercedes
María de las Mercedes Santa Cruz y Montalvo, Condesa de Merlin · La Habana, 1789 – Paris, 1852
Known as “La Belle Créole,” Mercedes was one of Cuba’s earliest female published authors, a celebrated soprano, and a pioneering voice for Cuban women in literature. Her extraordinary life took her from Havana to Madrid and Paris, where she hosted a celebrated musical salon and brought Cuban culture, society, and identity to an international audience. Through her writing, she documented Cuba’s people, culture, economy, government, and slavery, called for reforms to Spanish colonial rule and greater Cuban participation in government, and helped establish a literary tradition through which Cuban women could tell the story of their homeland.
